Mozart Festival to be Held in Ohio

On April 18, 2009 the Ohio Mozart Festival will be kicked off with a Wine Tasting. This wine tasting will start from 7:00 P.M. onwards at of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Love home, 7 Lisa Drive (Hamilton). An admission fee of $35.00 will be charge but purchased before April 1 then the cost will be $30.00. The wine tasting of 6 different wines that comes from different areas. Not only will you enjoy the wine tasting but there will also be beautiful music and spectacular cuisines available.

A Mozart Night Out will follow on April 22 from 6:00 P.M. onwards at the Ryans Tavern (225 High St.). Heavy clay soils are more friable (easier to break up) and their structure improved. Lime supplies plants with calcium; a lime deficiency in the plant will mean a deficiency in food value.

A heavy soil receiving quantities of organic matter requires from 40 to 50 pounds of lime to 1,000 square feet, or 2,000 pounds to the acre. A medium loam requires 30 pounds of lime, and a light, sandy soil, 20 to 25 pounds. This refers to agricultural lime, not to hydrated or builders lime. Agricultural lime can be used with seed, manure and most additive fertilizers without harm. Not so the other kind. Lime is best spread on the surface of the soil after the initial preparation, and worked into the surface. If you have doubts about adding lime to your soil, test your soil for acidity. Send a sample to a private laboratory or utilize the services of your state agricultural experimental station.

In milder areas the first sowing of beets, carrots, radishes, turnip, spinach, and cabbage can be made. Rows spaced 12 to 20 inches apart are suitable for most crops. A little superphosphate in the bottom of the row will aid germination and initial growth. Onion sets or seeds can be planted now, too. Seeds produce the best onions but require a rich soil and more attention. Early peas of the smooth-seeded type may be sown now; the wrinkled type may be sown a little later.

Sow hardy annuals... sweet peas, cornflowers, larkspur, and poppies. Sweet peas need good soil preparation. The seeds are sown down the center of a foot-wide trench which is dug 18 inches deep and the soil mixed with compost. After sprouting, the seedlings are thinned out to stand 6 inches apart. Then wire, string, or twiggy branches are supplied to support the climbing vines.

The most common form of chemical pollution occurs when it rains, and the synthetic chemical fertilizers get washed out of the soil into the rainwater runoff. This agricultural runoff flows into the ponds and streams, where they frequently kill the fish and other water life. These chemicals also eventually leech down into the groundwater that people and animals drink.

Lastly, inorganic fertilizers are absorbed by crops and plants. Once people eat the produce that came from those crops, the chemicals will stay in their body and will result in health problems. Eating produce with chemicals for only a single time may not harm anyone, however if you continue to consume products grown with inorganic material, you will eventually see its bad effects on your health.

WHAT MAKES ORGANIC FERTILIZER BETTER?

Organic fertilizers are made from natural occurring organic materials, which include plants and animal matter, and because of this there was no problem introducing it into the local environment.

In terms of encouraging crop growth, however, organic fertilizers are just as good as synthetic fertilizers. Whereas synthetic fertilizers are concentrated, organic fertilizers are more diluted throughout a large amount of biomass. On the one hand, this means you have to use more organic fertilizer to achieve the same effect as a smaller amount of synthetic fertilizer. On the other hand, however, this means that the nutrients are released into the soil gradually, at a slower, more consistent rate over the course of the crops growth cycle. This prevents the boom-and-bust cycle that some synthetic fertilizers can create in crops.

Finally, a 32-year study in Sweden between organic and synthetic fertilizers found that, although both greatly encouraged crop growths over unfertilized fields, organic fertilizers encouraged a higher yield than synthetic fertilizers (65% compared to 50%).

Foreign language learning is nothing different from anything else you do in your life. People also make some common mistakes that should have been avoided.

Firstly, focus is all you need. I you might have such experience like this: After researching for much time about a language (German), finally having decided to learn it and having bought almost all of the books that could be found in the local bookstores and even traveled a long way to another place faraway to buy that most desired book, someone speaking another language (French) distracts me from staying with the language I am curently learning.

Believe me, forget about changing over and over. All that you need as a starter is focus on what you are learning. Think about taking another language only after you have achieved the goals you set up for the chosen language. Otherwise, you will end up learning nothing.

Focus on the good things about the language you are working on. The things you love about this language will benefit you very much in avoiding the first mistake. For me, I like the pronunciation of French. But I love that of German because further steps into its pronunciation allowed me to find out that it's the most sexy language when a man speaks it.

2. Varying your language learning each day. Alternate reading, writing, listening, watching during the days of the week. Our purpose as beginners is to build interests. So varying the learning process, things will not easily get boring. And interesting things are always good motivations. However, learning everyday is critical.

Don't study long hours one day when you like to while doing nothing on other days. Familiarity is the most important thing for learing a language. The more familiar you are with it, the more progressive you can get. So do it for 15 to 30 minitues everyday, which is better than 3 hours on sundays.

The third is to find your own featured way of learning foreign languages. If you like movies and TV plays, why not sitting in front of the great invention in the human history and watching some movies in the language you learn. If you like writing, why not keep a diary and ask someone to proofread it for you.

Take myself as an example. I am interested in reading aloud. I can do it for hours long. This could be attributted the teachers back in the primary school who often asked me to read texts aloud to the class. Now I did the same thing in learning a foreign language and found out that it worked to get my mouth familiar with the word flow.

Last but not least, no matter if you are learning a language or have started foreign language learning, please note the above three tips. You will thank me after a few months.

Take care of your school GPA from 9th grade/freshman year

This is a no-brainer but should be said anyway. Some students like to slack-off after middle school - it's a new environment, you may not have a solid group of friends, you're still getting use to everything. But a poor freshman year GPA can kill you.

You think that a few C's or 70's can be made up by strong AP and Honors inflated grades, but Harvard pays attention to your COMPLETE 4 YEAR TRANSCRIPT. A few C's and 70's in easy courses like Biology I will make Ivy League schools think that you can't handle basic academic material. Your high school class grades matter - all 4 years.

Prepare for and take the SAT early

In an earlier article on SAT tips for Ivy League schools, I explain the "minimum" score necessary for top schools.

My overall advice is that you should shoot for a perfect score but be happy with a "good score" (anything above 2100). Don't take the test too many times - anything more than 2 or 3 without huge 100+ strides each time just makes you look desperate and incapable.

You should also take the test as early as possible - take the Duke University TIP in 7th grade, take the PSAT in freshman year or sophomore year at least once. It's great practice, and it won't go on your permanent score transcript and Harvard won't be mad that you got a 1800 as a 9th grader in high school.

It's a great chance for some practice that is completely risk-free. Why wouldn't you??

Get involved in clubs early

Notice my advice here - an early start is ideal for Ivy League candidates. By joining different activities and clubs your freshman year, you demonstrate to Harvard that you are committed to specific interests/passions.

Ideally, you'd stay involved in those same clubs over at least a few years. However, if you find that the French Club is really not where you'd prefer spending Tuesday afternoon, that's ok too - just make sure you're not using the time watch reruns of the Simpsons.

Diversify at least a little

I usually say it's more about unique stories than it is about being good at everything. After all, college admissions offices want diverse and well-rounded student bodies but don't need everyone to be an early Renaissance man.

Build a core, related set of interests

The fact is, the amount of dissolved oxygen in your pond is critical to the health of your fish. Don't forget to check it often especially in the warm summer months.

There are several reasons why you need to pay attention to the oxygen level in the pond. First, its critical for the fish - this goes without saying. But it is also necessary for any vegetation you may have in the pond and most importantly for the critical chemical processes that go on including bacterial decomposition. Every pond has its own unique oxygen demand and it's constantly changing. It's affected by the number of fish and the amount of plant decomposition that goes on in the pond.

The amount of dissolved oxygen that a pond can hold is dependent on several factors. Moving water can absorb much more oxygen then water that is standing or stagnant. The water temperature also affects the amount of dissolved oxygen along with salinity. With freshwater ponds, however, salinity is really not a factor.

The warmer the water the less oxygen it can absorb. It's during the warm summer months that Koi pond aeration is so important. Watch the dissolved oxygen levels closely when it's hot. They should be kept at least between 5.0 and 5.5 mg per liter.

Keeping the water moving will provide good aeration and the oxygen level higher. With standing water, the oxygen levels can drop very quickly as the water becomes stagnant and dangerous for your fish. Waterfalls or fountains can help keep the water moving.

Don't let the algae growth in your pond get out of hand. While algae creates oxygen in the daytime, it depletes it at night. Too much algae will make it much more difficult to control the oxygen level in your pond.

If you must feed your fish during the heat of the day, remember they will utilize more oxygen then if they feed in the cooler hours. That's why the oxygen level can quickly drop dangerously low if your fish are feeding in the heat of the day and the water temperature is the warmest.

Summer Camp in the North woods of Minnesota is more than the pristine beauty of lakes, forests and eagles flying overhead. To me, Summer Camp is another home with another family. But camp isn't just any family or any home, Swift Nature Camp is a special Minnesota Camp.

This summer home is filled with acceptance, love, encouragement, and true, down to earth friends who you will end up calling your camp family. Your counselors act as parents, older siblings, etc. They are great people to look up to. The campers are great friends for life. You may even end up looking at them as siblings. Acceptance is everywhere, no one kicks you out of the cabin because of who you are. Your uniqueness is celebrated. This is the main reason why I love Swift Nature Camp...it's so much more than just having fun.

Activities are everywhere at summer camp, there is so much to do. Here are just a few: Archery, Swimming, Fishing, Boating, Tubing, and Riflery. You are never bored and active all day long. The counselors help you get better regardless of that your skill level is. All activities are noncompetitive and so we all support each other, rather than worry who is best.

I'll never forget the great out of camp trips we took like the Superior Hiking Trail. What an adventure! I loved being in the of the forest. overlooking Lake Superior. The wildlife was wonderful too we saw hawks, bald eagles, & deer. This is why I love Minnesota Camps

Life in a cabin is about learning from others and with others. It is becoming a team of understanding. Sure, sometimes we had our fights or minor issues, but almost always they were resolved and we grew closer as a team for them.

I always loved the Nature Center. It is a great place to learn about Nature and the Environment. The Director is always fun and teaches us loads of cool things but its not at all like school. There are all sorts of animals that are fun to observe and hold. One day they even made me feel a little more comfortable when I was homesick.

I'm returning to Swift Nature Camp for all these reasons. I love camp and hope to be a Counselor in training when I'm sixteen and then a counselor when I'm eighteen. So, I'll see yawl in the North woods of Minnesota this summer!

Did you hear about the wash balls? If not, first let me explain what they are. Wash balls are plastic balls that you put inside your washing machine together with your dirty clothes. By using them you almost do not need to use any washing detergent. So you save some money and save the environment. Do they work? The opinions are divided, lets take a look.

I have been using wash balls for a few months now. I think that they do work since I haven't noticed any big difference in how clean my clothes are now in comparison to before I was using them. But I must confess that I always add some washing detergent because I like the smell that it leaves on freshly washed clothes.

Now lets take a look at how washing balls work.

Every wash ball is actually hollow and filled with ceramic pellets. These pellets must first be charged. You achieve that by placing them on your window or someplace similar so the sun can shine on them. Sun or UV rays to be more exact are supposed to give them special energy that later influences the water. You are supposed to do this about once every month.

You need to charge the pellets so the emit more infra red rays. When you put them in the washing machine and the wash balls come into contact with water they start emitting infra red rays and by doing so they break water molecules into smaller clusters. They start to move faster and can better penetrate the dirty fibers in your clothes.

Washing balls will also soften the fibers in you clothes while they are washing. By producing negative ions - anions they make the fibers softer and dirt can come out faster and easier.

Wash ball also eliminates the chlorine from the water. This helps save the clothes (colors and elasticity). By doing this it softens the water and soft water has lower surface tension and is better for any kind of washing.

Washing detergent also produce a certain level of pH in the water to better dissolve oils and dirt from your clothes. Wash balls can do the same (though producers do not tell us how).

These were the basic principles of how wash balls work and how do they replace washing detergents. Since I am not that good at physics I can not tell you if this is theoretically and practically possible. But as I said I am using washing balls for some time now and they seem to work. You can also find quite a few comments from people that say they are just a fraud. I think it is best to decide for your self.

The American Pit Bull Terrier, however, did not always have good fortune and high praises. This breed went through countless controversies, like dog fighting and fatal human aggression, that kennel clubs changed its name and standards a few times in many years. From the Bull Terrier to American Pit Bull Terrier, from American Pit Bull Terrier to Staffordshire Terrier, and finally to its present name and current standard- the American Pit Bull Terrier.

February in the North is an exceedingly trying month for "the home gardener" The days are growing longer and winter seems to be on the wane, but there is so little that can be done and there is a great desire to be doing something. Some gardeners just cant wait to get started and they do things that should not be done.

For example, there are those who make the mistake of starting flower seeds in the house expecting to get a head start on the coming season. In the North, February is much too soon for this. The germination of the seeds is not the problem; they sprout very readily, but seedling plants do not have good enough growing conditions in the house at this time of year.

When they have grown a few inches tall, they start to lean toward the light and soon grow pale, thin and spindly. What was started with high hopes soon becomes a great disappointment and usually discourages the eager gardener from trying this interesting and profitable adventure when it should be done, under more favorable circumstances and at a time when there is a very good chance for success.

The recommended time to start plants from seeds in the North is some time early in March. It is only those few who have home greenhouses who can expect to succeed with seeds started in February and even then advantages are gained only with petunias, pansies and snapdragons.

A very important point to remember in connection with garden seeds indoors in advance of the season is that there must be a good light, enough space and the right temperature from the time seeds sprout until the plants can be set out in the garden. Seed and fertilizer relationship is also another important consideration. A serious lack of any or all of these conditions, even for a short while, will be harmful.

Once started, plants must be able to develop under continuously favorable conditions or they will do poorly. Plants seriously checked in their development make poor specimens even if they survive until outdoor planting time.

The Lion King Still Reigns on Broadway

The lion has been a symbol of "Might and Right" for longer than anyone can remember. The powerful, majestic creature evokes a sense of awe, certainly in children and probably in most adults. Well, The Lion King does not disappoint! The musical opened on Broadway in November of 1997, and it is now the 9th longest-running show in Broadway's history.

There are a lot of good reasons for The Lion King's continuing full-house performances. Not least among them are Elton John's music and Tim Rice's lyrics, and the direction of Julie Taymor. Critics and fans alike are astounded by the transition from animated film to live action on stage, because the cross-over is almost seamless. All it takes is imagination, and this show doesn't even require too much of that, since the whole spectacle just sweeps the viewer along in a truly noble adventure.

When The Lion King was released as an animated film in 1994, it turned out to be one of Disney's crowning achievements. The movie got an Academy Award for Best Music: Original Score, as well as a Tony Award and the Olivier Award. For sheer entertainment, the stage production is very hard to beat, and the theme is both universally familiar and deeply touching.

Set in the plains of Africa, the plot follows the doings of oh-so-human creatures: the Lion King Mufasa and his mate and their cub, Simba. The birds and beasts, including the hornbill Zazu, the meerkat Timon, the warthog Pumbaa and the ambitious and conniving Scar, Mufasa's brother, all have their place in the unfolding drama. Just like the rest of this old world, there's good and bad in everyone, but it's pretty clear who's on the side of the angels. (Hyenas would seem to have no redeeming traits; nor does Scar.)

As the plot unfolds, the malicious Scar engineers the death-by-wildebeest of Mufasa, and tells Simba that it's his own fault, sending the grief-stricken lion cub away expecting to die in shame and despair. Simba is rescued from the vultures by Timon and Pumbaa, with their motto of "hakuna matata", which means something like "Who cares?" The lion grows to young adulthood with this attitude, and thinks he has forgotten the past and his beloved and revered father.

Simba 'grows up' with this creed as his motto, but in the meantime Scar (who is actually the murderer of Mufasa) has taken over the lion kingdom, making allies of the wretched hyenas. Under his rule, everything deteriorates horribly, and finally Nala, a young lioness now, and Simba's dearest childhood friend, goes in search of help. She finds Simba and in spite of his resistance, he is persuaded to return and help his friends when he 'hears' his father telling him to "Remember!" In the final battle, Scar falls, to be killed by his own hyena "friends".

As a fairy tale with a moral, The Lion King shines as possibly the most entrancing and impressive ever to reach the stage. Touches of comedy, tragedy, pathos and grandeur make the show the huge success that it has been and remains. It is still running on Broadway, so you can get tickets to see it there, or look for a touring production coming to a stage near you. Whatever you do, don't miss it; The Lion King is an experience that you will treasure for a long, long time.

Sham Trusts Explained

Unfortunately, most people think that once assets are placed in a Trust they are protected forever! However, this is simply not the case. If a Trust is found to be a "sham", then asset protection can be lost. So what is a Sham Trust?

The concept of Sham Trust has evolved over time but for our purposes, it can be thought of as something that isn't genuine, a disguise or a faade.

Professional Trustees often 'rescue' a Trust from the sham stigma. They do this by faithfully and properly carrying out the work of being a Professional Trustee. This means they review the activities of the Trust and ensure that all administration work has been correctly carried out.

Why is this so important? Trustees have a legal duty to discuss, agree and document the activities the Trust is undertaking. When this doesn't occur, the door is opened for a creditor or even a beneficiary to allege that the Trust is a sham, and if the allegation is successful, asset protection can be lost and the trust assets can be "up for grabs".

Sometimes a Trust can be a sham at its very beginning. This occurs when Settlors and Trustees create a trust and transfer assets to the Trust, but in reality never intend for the Trust to do anything or to operate properly. Usually, what is really happening is that the Trust has been set up to conceal the real intentions of the parties or to conceal a transaction.

Emerging Sham Trust

A common type of Sham Trust we see today is called an Emerging Sham. This is where a genuine Trust is established but it becomes a sham over time. For example, the Trustees start out practicing good behaviour, but then stop meeting, discussing and documenting what activities they will undertake on behalf of the Trust.

What then happens is that records documenting Trustee discussions or decisions are not kept and frequently, the Settlor starts to treat the Trust assets as if they were his very own property. A regular example of this is where the Settlor withdraws money from the Trust's bank account for his own personal use (or worse, for someone else's use) without the agreement of his fellow Trustees or without documentation.

It's important to note however that a lack of documentation won't of itself make a Trust a sham, but it does assist a Court in finding that a sham exist.

When a Trust is found to be a sham, loss of asset protection can result.

As I mentioned in my previous article, children under age 5 are the usual victims of plant poisoning owing to their curious nature. At this age, it is hard to resist the allure of bright-colored and sweet-smelling flowers even if some of them are poisonous.

"Lots of plants are poisonous or capable of causing highly allergic reactions. Some will also pierce you with their sharp spines. Few actually do lasting harm but some should be treated with care and respect," according to doctors at the Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia.

"Many plants have poisonous bulbs or roots but as these are usually safely underground, they are not likely to poison anyone. Others taste so awful that it is difficult to eat enough to cause a serious injury. Oleander, for example tastes so bitter and unpalatable that it is difficult to accidentally eat very many of the leaves. On the other hand there are plants that look appealing but contact can have bad results," they added.

However, protecting our kids is easier said than done since it can be difficult to recognize a poisonous plant. Often there are no telltale signs or characteristics that distinguish a poisonous plant from one that isn't. Therefore, we have to educate ourselves to save our children.

"The amount of poison in a plant tends to vary with location, age of plant, season and weather conditions. In some plants, the toxin is confined only to certain parts. Additionally, plants normally considered non-toxic may have been treated with an insecticide, making them toxic," revealed the experts at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Canada.

What are the symptoms of plant poisoning? Be wary of the following: vomiting, stomach cramps, irregular heartbeat and convulsions.

"The type and severity of symptoms will vary according to the type of plant eaten, the amount swallowed and the size of the child. The most common problems are stinging around the mouth and skin allergies," said doctors at the Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia.

In case of skin contact, wash the area with clean running water to flush out the poison. Likewise for the eye which should be irrigated for at least 20 minutes. The child can go to bed pain free, but can wake up in the middle of the night complaining of throbbing pain in the legs. But the good part is that these pains vanish by morning. About twenty five to forty percent of the children are known to experience growing pain.

One of the major reasons of getting growing pains is because of the strenuous activities of the kids during the day. All the jumping around, running and climbing make the muscles tired. But no evidence has been collected which can prove that the growing pain is caused by bone growth. Growing pains are also known to be caused by spurt of growth. This happens because the tendons or the muscles are too tight and do not synchronize with the growing of the bones. As a results muscle spasms are caused which last for less than fifteen minutes.

The child usually gets pain in both the legs and not just one. And usually, growing pains do not get accompanied with redness, swelling or fever. The pain should be over by morning and if it is still uninterrupted after the awakening of the kid, the problem could be related to something else and more serious.

Children can prevent the growing pains by doing stretching exercises on a regular basis. The exercise need not be complex. Use your index finger to hold down the fifth string on the second fret and your middle finger to hold down the fourth string on the second fret. Both fingers need to have plenty of room on the fret and can not touch each other. Try the notes out and alter your fingering a bit until it sounds right to you. Finally, strum the E-minor chord. You will note right away the dark sound associated with this acoustic guitar chord. With a little practice, you will have this chord down in no time.

If you are a beginner, good basic acoustic guitar chords to learn are A-major, A-minor, C-major and D-major. You should try to move back and forth between the acoustic guitar chords as quickly as you can. Practicing quick finger placement is critical.

No More Dirty Grout

Once again, I am forced to do bathroom duty by circumstances. Don't get me wrong, I'm someone who wants the living area surrounding me and my family clean and safe. I just don't want to be the one doing cleaning. There are probably people out there whose job it is to deal with undesirable matters such as these. Me, I'm busy with my life to waste time with mundane things such as cleaning. Unfortunately, my reluctance at letting my wife do the cleaning instead of me, has led me step forward and do the job myself in the end.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the capacity needed to clean the bathroom (the grout, in particular) thoroughly; I never liked cleaning that room as a child, much less cleaning two bathrooms as an adult. I have my male pride to thank for the driving me forward, scrubbing and cleaning as much as I could. Bottom line, though, I was fighting a losing battle; it was impossible to complete clean the grout.

It's time to strategize. I beat a hasty retreat and thought over what I should do, as any fighter knows. In the end, I decided to bring in the cavalry reinforcements. After a bit of consultation with my commanding officer (aka the wife), I went through and called in the professionals.

After a day or two, the professional cleaners arrived with their equipment and machines. We discussed their fee for a bit and after agreeing on a figure, the cleaners set up their machines and started cleaning up the bathroom while I stayed downstairs. The hum of the machine soothed me, as I knew the work I so hated was being done for me.

Cool. I must say the bathroom floor looks pretty good. Almost brand spanking new, if I may say so. Again, I never would have had the patience to do this myself. Fortunately, as the cleaners have said, because we regularly cleaned up the grout ourselves, they didn't need to do much. Me, I'm just happy I'm not doing the cleaning myself.

Why Does God Allow Suffering?

Probably the biggest question for all people, whether they believe in God or not, is why is there so much suffering in this world? This is a question that probably won't ever be answered until we meet God in person. Many people have opinions, and I'd like to give mine here.

Why does it seem like God doesn't want good things for me? Why wouldn't he want me to have good health, and to be happy and safe? Why wouldn't he want me to have enough income to pay my bills, help my kids with school, and go on a vacation once in a while? It doesn't seem like these things are that much to ask for. I don't think He's that concerned with these things because there is something that is much more important to Him.

Dr. Larry Crabb is a best-selling author, counselor and psychologist. He's written many popular books including "Inside Out", "Finding God", and "The Marriage Builder". I've read some of his books and liked them, though the ones I read were really deep and kind of hard to digest.

Recently, I discovered another book by Dr. Crabb called "Shattered Dreams - God's Unexpected Pathway to Joy". I started reading it and I realized it was different than the others I've read by him. It was actually much easier to read, and I could tell from the writing style that this book was intimately important to him, that he had really lived what he was writing here.

Most people believe that joy and happiness are the same thing. If we have material things to make us comfortable such as a big house, a new car, a great job than we'll have joy. Maybe having a loving husband or wife and obedient children is what's necessary. But while those things might make us happy, they don't necessarily lead to joy.

God wants us to find joy in a different place - in relationship with Him. If you can achieve that relationship and still have the above-mentioned happiness, that's great! I don't think they are necessarily exclusive of each other. After all, God does want us to have good things. The Bible says "If you know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!".

You see, when we achieve that point of supposed happiness, where we have the earthly things that we desire, sometimes we become content with that and don't seek God anymore. Or we might become so involved in hanging onto that happiness that it consumes all of our time, and keeps us from relationship with God. Therefore, God is willing to allow to experience some suffering to build that relationship. How we react to this pain is what determines whether we'll have joy or not. Most of us will do whatever is necessary to minimize the pain.

Larry Crabb tells us in "Shattered Dreams" that we need to experience that pain and not try to minimize it or turn away from it if we're going to experience the joy that God desires us to have, and that we really hunger for in our hearts. This is no fun, but the bottom line is that's it's the only path to experiencing true joy. After reading this book, I believe that this is why God allows pain and suffering and why bad things happen to good people.

Mum and a dad have a heap of responsibilites when bringing up a family and the job just seems to be endless. In the world that we live in today there are so many electrical appliances and synthetic products that are so dangerously flammable that fire protection is a must to be discussed with the children.

One of the most common fires in the family is the fire in the kitchen. A fire at the stove is a common complaint. In fact many do not even get recorded. Small oil spills, bench top open grillers and the like are always causing little fires, but left unattended, they could be so bad as to turn a familys life right upside down.

All households should have a fire extinguisher near the kitchen and the children should know the basics of how to use it. Often you hear on the news that a child has saved someone by phoning emergency servces, or some other life saving deed? Children do understand safety issues if they are taught properly and they need to know basic fire protection rules.

There are fires from faulty wiring at stoves, but the most common is during cooking, or pots left on the stove with the element turned on.

Dont trust those bench top grillers either. It is not so much the griller itself, but they are commonly used for cheese grills, and the fat from the cheese drips down onto the bottom element and before you know it you have a fire. A lot of people think these are safe and walk away, so be careful.

Water must never be used to put out a fire near electrical wiring!

So what would you use if you had a fire at the stove? Use a fire blanket which will reduce the oxygen level, a CO2 fire extinguisher, and for a very small contained fire in the element tray you could throw on a handful of salt. Salt is excellent, and used in kitchens all around the world, but only if the fire is small. If you have something else use it.

Oil is the one kitchen product that causes so many problems. It gets very hot, is flamable on a hot element, and it spits if water or frozen food is put in it. So many people have suffered severe burns from dropping frozen food into hot oil.

If you are going to allow your children to cook with fat, make sure they are old enough to understand how to use it properly. In fact, it would be a good house rule that children can never cook with oil unless a parent is nearby. They also need to understand all your rules for fire protection of themselves, and the house.

Need I say it, even men are a bit of a handful in this area. This is not tongue in cheek, this is true. Men seem to panic quicker, especially those that are only cooking occasionally. So educate hubby as well.

If you are going to be having lots of meals cooked ourdoors, make sure the family understands all the fire protection rules for that too. Issues to cover are gas BBQs, electric BBQs, charcoal BBQs, camp fires, and other systems that you may use outdoors.

Ensure that you have discussed with your family all the fire protection issues, how to go about being safe, and what to do in case of fire.
